Our latest project here at Raffia is a limited edition mini collection of ties and pocket squares very aptly named "The Tie Collection". We partnered with Ghanaian-born photographer, blogger, designer and Creative Director of Bôhten, Nana K. Boateng on our photo story and put him in front of the camera for a change.
#TeamRaffia thinks Nana is awesome but don't just take our word for it. Check out his answers to our 5 questions and see for yourself.
1. Describe yourself in 5 words
I'm adaptable, trustworthy, driven, strategic and friendly.
2. What inspires you?
I see value in the oddest things (even from a designer's perspective), so as cliche as it might sound, everything. A lot of my best ideas develop from really random, tough or very nurturing situations. Definitely draw alot from seeing the work of other creatives too.
3. What work do you most enjoy doing?
I'm having to learn how to use a camera properly for Ghana in HD (a website/blog on style), and I'm starting to enjoy the process of editing. Its gratifying to see a set of images go from mere shots to something more through calculated emphasis. I hope to develop that more as I take on new projects. Cleaning up my pad is also very therapeutic for me too, haha.
4. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
I came to Ghana highly ambitious and impatient. An old classmate who had moved here took me for a drink one day and gave me case after case of friends who came with lots of funds and now had nothing to show. His advice was simple: Take your time, focus on developing your basics first. Then build.
It has helped me here immeasurably.
5. What are you working on right now?
Nothing. I kid. Working as a TA for the Fashion + Graphic Design departments at Radford University, acting as creative director for Bohten Eyewear and when I have time, developing visual identities for clients. Last but definitely not least, developing new content for Ghana in HD.
The Tie Collection is available in Accra at Domunique (Cuppa Cappuccino, Airport). You can also order online at www.raffiagh.com and by phone/whatsapp on +233 248 478 980.
The All Africa Music Awards are creating a buzz these days. Being a huge fan of African Music, I spent a decent chunk of time checking out the nominees and bursting with pride at the range of genres and the insane level of talent I saw. Special shout-out to our girl Wiyaala who is nominated in 4 (!) different categories!
My favourite categories are the Revelation of The African Continent, Best Female Artiste West Africa and Best African Group/Duo/Band. If these were World Cup groups, they'd all be called the Group of Death.
Many of the nominees are musical giants and the categories are very tough ones. Ghana, however, has been known to punch well above its weight and I know Wiyaala won't disappoint.
I really couldn't choose which song I liked best but I have to say I LOVED the video below.
Check out the All Africa Music Awards website for the amazing nominees and happy voting!
I had the immense pleasure of sitting down to chat with DJ Bryma of Hype GH for his brand new podcast. It was fun and lively and very encouraging to meet another young Ghanaian doing his part to promote his country.
We talked about Raffia, the philosophy behind founding it and some of our plans for the next 5 years.
You can listen to the episode here. Our interview begins at 33:40.
Happy hump day and stay tuned for more Raffia updates.

Our very first collection was shot by the brilliant Charlene Asare who describes herself as a "pint-sized photographer based in London and Accra". Check out our lookbook.
Charlene burst onto the scene a couple of years ago and has established herself as a powerhouse in photography in Ghana and the UK. She has worked with countless big names in fashion and continues to do her thing in style. Oh, and did I mention how cool and fun she is?
